Chapter 3: Proportional Reasoning-2 (Ratio)

Step-by-step answers to every "Figure it Out" and in-text question of Part 2, Chapter 3, Proportional Reasoning-2 (NCERT Class 8 Maths, Ganita Prakash Part 2, 2026-27): map scales (RF), ratios with more than two terms, dividing a whole in a given ratio, triangles from angle and side ratios, drawing pie charts, and inverse proportion problems on speed, workers, pumps and provisions. All 27 questions are answered, with the key answer highlighted.

3.2 Ratios in Maps

1
Convert 60,00,000 cm to kilometres.
Solution

1 m = 100 cm and 1 km = 1000 m, so 1 km cm.

60 km, so on a 1 : 60,00,000 map, 1 cm stands for 60 km.

2
Using the map (RF 1 : 60,00,000), find the geographical distance from Bengaluru to Chennai and from Mangaluru to Chennai. Do different maps give the same distance?
Solution

On a true 1 : 60,00,000 map, 1 cm = 60 km. Measure in a straight line between the city dots:

  • Bengaluru – Chennai: about 4.8 cm, so 290 km.
  • Mangaluru – Chennai: about 9.8 cm, so 590 km.

The map printed in the textbook is marked "not to scale", so a ruler on that page will not give exactly these lengths. With an atlas map, use its own RF the same way.

Different maps have different scales, but each converts back to roughly the same ground distance. Small differences come from measuring errors and from how thick the dots are.

About 290 km (Bengaluru–Chennai) and about 590 km (Mangaluru–Chennai); maps with other scales give nearly the same distances.

3.3 and 3.4 Ratios with More than 2 Terms

1
Example 1: Red : Blue : White = 2 : 3 : 5 with 10 litres of white. What is the total volume of the purple paint?
Solution

5 parts = 10 L, so 1 part = 2 L. Red = 4 L and blue = 6 L.

Total L.

20 litres.

1
Warm-up/cool-down : batting : bowling : fielding = 3 : 4 : 3 : 5 in a 150-minute session. How long is each?
Solution

parts, and minutes per part:

  • Warm-up/cool-down: 30 min
  • Batting: 40 min
  • Bowling: 30 min
  • Fielding: 50 min

30 min, 40 min, 30 min and 50 min.

2
Odiya : Hindi : English books = 3 : 2 : 1, and there are 288 Odiya books. How many Hindi and English books are there?
Solution

3 parts = 288, so 1 part = 96:

  • Hindi:
  • English:

192 Hindi books and 96 English books.

3
100 coins: ₹10 : ₹5 : ₹2 : ₹1 coins = 4 : 3 : 2 : 1. How much money is there?
Solution

parts of 10 coins each:

  • 40 coins of ₹10 = ₹400
  • 30 coins of ₹5 = ₹150
  • 20 coins of ₹2 = ₹40
  • 10 coins of ₹1 = ₹10

₹600

4
Construct a triangle with sides in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. Will all such triangles be congruent?
Solution

Choose any unit, for example 3 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm, or 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm. Construct by SSS:

  1. Draw the base.
  2. Draw arcs with the other two lengths from its ends.
  3. Join the meeting point of the arcs to both ends.

Two triangles with sides in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5: same shape (similar), different sizes, so not congruent

Not congruent: they have the same shape (in fact each has a right angle, since ) but different sizes. They are similar, not congruent. Congruent triangles need equal sides, not just equal ratios.

Draw e.g. 3 cm, 4 cm, 5 cm. All such triangles have the same shape (and a right angle) but need not be congruent, because the sizes can differ.

5
Can you construct a triangle with sides in the ratio 1 : 3 : 5?
Solution

No. With sides , the two shorter sides add up to , which is less than .

In any triangle, the sum of two sides must be greater than the third side. The two short sides would not reach each other.

No: 1 + 3 < 5, so the triangle inequality fails.

3.5 A Slice of the Pie: Figure it Out (page 62)

1
Of 360 people, 90 like summer, 120 like rainy and the rest like winter. Draw a pie chart.
Solution

Winter . With 360 people, each person = 1°:

  • Summer 90°
  • Rainy 120°
  • Winter 150°
Winter 150°Rainy 120°Summer 90°
Favourite seasons of 360 people: one person = 1°

Summer 90°, Rainy 120°, Winter 150°.

2
Draw a pie chart: Entertainment 50%, Sports 25%, News 15%, Information 10%.
Solution

1% of 360° = 3.6°:

  • Entertainment: 50% → 180°
  • Sports: 25% → 90°
  • News: 15% → 54°
  • Information: 10% → 36°
Entertainment 180°Sports 90°News 54°Information 36°
Favourite TV channels: each 1% = 3.6°

180°, 90°, 54°, 36°.

3
Prepare a pie chart of your class's favourite subjects.
Solution

Collect the numbers, then use angle . A sample class of 40 students:

SubjectLanguageArtsVocationalSocial SciencePhysical Ed.MathsScience
Students6445687
Angle54°36°36°45°54°72°63°
Maths 72°Science 63°Language 54°Social Science 45°Physical Ed. 54°Arts 36°Vocational 36°
Sample class of 40: each student = 360° ÷ 40 = 9°

Use angle = (students ÷ total) × 360°; check that the angles add to 360°.

3.6 Inverse Proportions

1
Can Puneeth's father's trip (3 h at 30 km/h; how long at 60 km/h?) be written as 30 : 60 :: 3 : x? Does travel time increase or decrease as speed increases? Check the other modes of transport.
Solution

No. That proportion would give hours, but a faster vehicle takes less time. Doubling the speed halves the time, so the trip takes 1.5 hours.

The table changes by the same factor in opposite directions:

  • Walk → bicycle: speed ×3, time ÷3 (18 → 6)
  • Bicycle → motorcycle: ×2 and ÷2 (6 → 3)
  • Motorcycle → car: ×2 and ÷2 (3 → 1.5)
  • Walk → car: ×12 and ÷12 (18 → 1.5)

In every case, speed × time = 90 km.

No: time decreases as speed increases (1.5 h by car). Speed × time = 90 for every mode, so this is an inverse proportion.

Figure it Out (page 65)

1
Which tables show inverse proportion? (i) x: 40, 80, 25, 16; y: 20, 10, 32, 50 (ii) x: 40, 80, 25, 16; y: 20, 10, 12.5, 8 (iii) x: 30, 90, 150, 10; y: 15, 5, 3, 45
Solution

Check whether is constant:

  1. 800, 800, 800, 800, so inverse.
  2. 800, 800, 312.5, 128, so not inverse. (Here throughout, which is a direct proportion.)
  3. 450, 450, 450, 450, so inverse.

(i) and (iii) are in inverse proportion; (ii) is not (it is direct).

2
x and y are in inverse proportion. Fill in: x = 16, 12, __, 36; y = 9, __, 48, __.
Solution

  • :
  • :
  • :

x: 16, 12, 3, 36; y: 9, 12, 48, 4.

3
Example 6: is the quantity of work and the time taken to do it directly or inversely proportional?
Solution

Directly: at a fixed rate of working, twice the work takes twice the time.

What is inversely proportional is the time and the number of people (or the rate of working).

Directly proportional (for a fixed rate of working).

Figure it Out (page 67)

1
Which pairs are in inverse proportion? (i) taps and time to fill a tank (ii) painters and days to paint a fixed wall (iii) distance travelled and petrol in the tank (iv) speed and time on a fixed route (v) length of cloth and price at a fixed rate (vi) pages in a book and reading time at a fixed speed
Solution
  • Inverse: (i), (ii) and (iv). More of one means proportionally less of the other.
  • Direct: (iii), (v) and (vi). Both go up together by the same factor.

(i), (ii) and (iv) are inverse; (iii), (v) and (vi) are direct.

2
24 pencils cost ₹120. How much will 20 pencils cost?
Solution

This is a direct proportion. One pencil costs ₹5, so 20 pencils cost ₹100.

Giraffe 2.5, elephant 3.5, human 8, dog 10.5, cat 13, squirrel 15, python 18, bat 20 hours.

5
Pie chart: Walk 90°, Bus 120°, Two-wheeler 60°, Cycle 60°, Car the rest. (i) What is the most common mode? (ii) What fraction travel by car? (iii) If 18 travel by car, how many children were surveyed? How many use taxis? (iv) Which two modes have equal numbers?
Solution

The car slice is .

  1. Bus (120°, the largest slice).
  2. Car: .
  3. of the total is 18, so 216 children were surveyed. There is no taxi slice, so 0 use taxis.
  4. Cycle and two-wheeler (60° each), with children each.

(i) Bus (ii) 1/12 (iii) 216 children; none use taxis (iv) cycle and two-wheeler (36 each).
