Exercise 5.1
1 Prove that the function f (x) = 5x – 3 is continuous at x = 0, at x = – 3 and at x = 5.

At x = 5 : lim x → 5 ( 5 x − 3 ) = 22 = f ( 5 ) .
In each case the limit equals the value, so f is continuous at all three points.
Limit = value at each point, so f is continuous at x = 0, −3, 5.
2 Examine the continuity of the function f (x) = 2x² – 1 at x = 3.
Solution
f ( 3 ) = 2 ( 9 ) − 1 = 17 and lim x → 3 ( 2 x 2 − 1 ) = 17 . They are equal.

(b) Domain is x = 5 . For c = 5 , lim x → c x − 5 1 = c − 5 1 = f ( c ) . Continuous at every point of its domain.
(c) For x = − 5 , f ( x ) = x + 5 ( x − 5 ) ( x + 5 ) = x − 5 ; for every c in the domain, lim x → c f ( x ) = c − 5 = f ( c ) . Continuous.
(d) f ( x ) = 5 − x for x < 5 and x − 5 for x ≥ 5 . Each piece is continuous; at x = 5 : LHL = 0 , RHL = 0 , f ( 5 ) = 0 . Continuous everywhere.
All four functions are continuous.
4 Prove that the function f (x) = xⁿ is continuous at x = n, where n is a positive integer.
Solution
lim x → n x n = n n = f ( n ) (a polynomial's limit is its value). So f is continuous at x = n .
lim x → n x n = n n = f ( n ) , so continuous.
5 Is the function f defined by f(x) = x, if x ≤ 1; f(x) = 5, if x > 1 continuous at x = 0? At x = 1? At x = 2?
Solution
At x = 0: near 0, f ( x ) = x , so lim x → 0 f ( x ) = 0 = f ( 0 ) . Continuous.
At x = 1: LHL = lim x → 1 − x = 1 , RHL = lim x → 1 + 5 = 5 . LHL ≠ RHL, so not continuous.

At x = 3: LHL = − 2 ( 3 ) = − 6 ; RHL = f ( 3 ) = 6 ( 3 ) + 2 = 20 . Not equal.

Solution
At x = 1 : LHL = f ( 1 ) = 6 , RHL = 1 − 5 = − 4 . Unequal, so f is discontinuous at x = 1 (and continuous everywhere else).
No; f is not continuous at x = 1.
14 Discuss the continuity of the function f, where f(x) = 3, if 0 ≤ x ≤ 1; f(x) = 4, if 1 < x < 3; f(x) = 5, if 3 ≤ x ≤ 10.

18 For what value of λ is the function defined by f(x) = λ(x² – 2x), if x ≤ 0; f(x) = 4x + 1, if x > 0 continuous at x = 0? What about continuity at x = 1?
Solution
At x = 0 : LHL = f ( 0 ) = λ ( 0 ) = 0 ; RHL = 4 ( 0 ) + 1 = 1 . These are never equal, whatever λ is. So f is discontinuous at 0 for every λ.
At x = 1 : near 1, f ( x ) = 4 x + 1 , so lim x → 1 f ( x ) = 5 = f ( 1 ) . Continuous for every λ.
No value of λ makes f continuous at 0; f is continuous at x = 1 for every λ.

Solution
Let n be an integer. g ( n ) = n − n = 0 .
LHL: for n − 1 < x < n , [ x ] = n − 1 , so g ( x ) = x − n + 1 → 1 .
RHL: for n < x < n + 1 , [ x ] = n , so g ( x ) = x − n → 0 .
LHL ≠ RHL, so g is discontinuous at every integer.

17 Differentiate (x² – 5x + 8) (x³ + 7x + 9) in three ways: (i) by using product rule (ii) by expanding the product to obtain a single polynomial (iii) by logarithmic differentiation. Do they all give the same answer?
Solution
(i) Product rule: ( 2 x − 5 ) ( x 3 + 7 x + 9 ) + ( x 2 − 5 x + 8 ) ( 3 x 2 + 7 )
= ( 2 x 4 − 5 x 3 + 14 x 2 − 17 x − 45 ) + ( 3 x 4 − 15 x 3 + 31 x 2 − 35 x + 56 ) = 5 x 4 − 20 x 3 + 45 x 2 − 52 x + 11 .
(ii) Expanding: y = x 5 − 5 x 4 + 15 x 3 − 26 x 2 + 11 x + 72 , so d x d y = 5 x 4 − 20 x 3 + 45 x 2 − 52 x + 11 .
(iii) Log: y 1 d x d y = x 2 − 5 x + 8 2 x − 5 + x 3 + 7 x + 9 3 x 2 + 7 ; multiplying by y gives exactly the expression in (i), = 5 x 4 − 20 x 3 + 45 x 2 − 52 x + 11 .

Solution
Product rule twice: d x d [( uv ) w ] = d x d ( uv ) w + uv d x d w = ( d x d u v + u d x d v ) w + uv d x d w .
Logarithmic: y = uv w ⇒ log y = log u + log v + log w , so y 1 d x d y = u u ′ + v v ′ + w w ′ . Multiply by y = uv w : d x d y = u ′ v w + u v ′ w + uv w ′ .

f ( x ) = x 3 for x ≥ 0 and − x 3 for x < 0 .
f ′ ( x ) = 3 x 2 (x > 0 ), − 3 x 2 (x < 0 ); at 0, lim h → 0 h ∣ h ∣ 3 = 0 , so f ′ ( 0 ) = 0 . Thus f ′ ( x ) = 3 x ∣ x ∣ .
f ′′ ( x ) = 6 x (x > 0 ), − 6 x (x < 0 ); at 0, lim h → 0 h 3 h ∣ h ∣ = lim 3∣ h ∣ = 0 . So f ′′ exists everywhere.
f ′′ ( x ) = 6∣ x ∣ , i.e. 6x for x ≥ 0 and −6x for x < 0.
19 Using the fact that sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B and the differentiation, obtain the sum formula for cosines.
Solution
Take A = x (variable) and B constant: sin ( x + B ) = sin x cos B + cos x sin B .
Differentiate w.r.t. x: cos ( x + B ) = cos x cos B − sin x sin B .
cos ( A + B ) = cos A cos B − sin A sin B
20 Does there exist a function which is continuous everywhere but not differentiable at exactly two points? Justify your answer.
Solution
Yes. f ( x ) = ∣ x − 1∣ + ∣ x − 2∣ is continuous everywhere (sum of continuous functions). At x = 1 : LHD = − 2 , RHD = 0 ; at x = 2 : LHD = 0 , RHD = 2 . Everywhere else it is linear, hence differentiable.
Yes, e.g. f(x) = |x − 1| + |x − 2| (not differentiable only at x = 1, 2).
21 If
y = f ( x ) l a g ( x ) m b h ( x ) n c , prove that
d x d y = f ′ ( x ) l a g ′ ( x ) m b h ′ ( x ) n c Solution
Expanding along R 1 : y = f ( x ) ( m c − nb ) − g ( x ) ( l c − na ) + h ( x ) ( l b − ma ) .
The brackets are constants, so d x d y = f ′ ( x ) ( m c − nb ) − g ′ ( x ) ( l c − na ) + h ′ ( x ) ( l b − ma ) , which is the expansion of the determinant with first row f ′ , g ′ , h ′ .
Proved.
22 If y = e a c o s − 1 x , –1 ≤ x ≤ 1, show that ( 1 − x 2 ) d x 2 d 2 y − x d x d y − a 2 y = 0 .
Solution
y 1 = e a c o s − 1 x ⋅ 1 − x 2 − a ⇒ 1 − x 2 y 1 = − a y .
Differentiate: 1 − x 2 y 2 − 1 − x 2 x y 1 = − a y 1 .
Multiply by 1 − x 2 : ( 1 − x 2 ) y 2 − x y 1 = − a 1 − x 2 y 1 = − a ( − a y ) = a 2 y .
( 1 − x 2 ) y 2 − x y 1 − a 2 y = 0
