Solution
Let x = sin θ , so θ = sin − 1 x ∈ [ − 6 π , 6 π ] for x ∈ [ − 2 1 , 2 1 ] . Then
3 x − 4 x 3 = 3 sin θ − 4 sin 3 θ = sin 3 θ
Since 3 θ ∈ [ − 2 π , 2 π ] , sin − 1 ( sin 3 θ ) = 3 θ = 3 sin − 1 x .
With x = sin θ , 3 x − 4 x 3 = sin 3 θ and 3 θ lies in the principal range, so the identity holds.

Solution
Let θ = sin − 1 5 3 , so tan θ = 4 3 and 0 < θ < 4 π (since 4 3 < 1 ).
tan 2 θ = 1 − 16 9 2 ⋅ 4 3 = 16 7 2 3 = 7 24
Since 0 < 2 θ < 2 π , 2 θ = tan − 1 7 24 .
tan ( 2 θ ) = 7 24 with 2 θ in the principal range.

Solution
sin − 1 17 8 = tan − 1 15 8 (8-15-17 triangle) and sin − 1 5 3 = tan − 1 4 3 .
tan − 1 15 8 + tan − 1 4 3 = tan − 1 1 − 15 8 ⋅ 4 3 15 8 + 4 3 = tan − 1 60 36 60 77 = tan − 1 36 77
(valid since 15 8 ⋅ 4 3 < 1 ).
Convert both to tan − 1 and add: tan − 1 36 77 .

Solution
Let A = cos − 1 5 4 (sin A = 5 3 ) and B = cos − 1 13 12 (sin B = 13 5 ); both are acute.
cos ( A + B ) = cos A cos B − sin A sin B = 5 4 ⋅ 13 12 − 5 3 ⋅ 13 5 = 65 48 − 15 = 65 33
Since 0 < A + B < π , A + B = cos − 1 65 33 .
cos ( A + B ) = 65 33 .
6 Prove that cos − 1 13 12 + sin − 1 5 3 = sin − 1 65 56 .
Solution
Let A = cos − 1 13 12 (sin A = 13 5 ) and B = sin − 1 5 3 (cos B = 5 4 ).
sin ( A + B ) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B = 13 5 ⋅ 5 4 + 13 12 ⋅ 5 3 = 65 20 + 36 = 65 56
A + B is acute (both angles are less than 4 π ), so A + B = sin − 1 65 56 .
sin ( A + B ) = 65 56 .

Solution
sin − 1 13 5 = tan − 1 12 5 and cos − 1 5 3 = tan − 1 3 4 .
tan − 1 12 5 + tan − 1 3 4 = tan − 1 1 − 12 5 ⋅ 3 4 12 5 + 3 4 = tan − 1 9 4 12 21 = tan − 1 16 63

x ∈ ( 0 , 4 π ) .
Solution
1 ± sin x = ( cos 2 x ± sin 2 x ) 2 . For x ∈ ( 0 , 4 π ) , cos 2 x > sin 2 x > 0 , so
1 + sin x = cos 2 x + sin 2 x and 1 − sin x = cos 2 x − sin 2 x .
2 sin 2 x 2 cos 2 x = cot 2 x ⇒ cot − 1 ( cot 2 x ) = 2 x
(since 2 x ∈ ( 0 , π ) ).
The fraction simplifies to cot 2 x , so the expression is 2 x .
10 Prove that

− 2 1 ≤ x ≤ 1 . [Hint: Put
x = cos 2 θ ]
Solution
Put x = cos 2 θ ; for − 2 1 ≤ x ≤ 1 , θ ∈ [ 0 , 8 3 π ] . Then 1 + x = 2 cos θ , 1 − x = 2 sin θ :
cos θ + sin θ cos θ − sin θ = 1 + tan θ 1 − tan θ = tan ( 4 π − θ )
Since 4 π − θ ∈ [ − 8 π , 4 π ] , the expression = 4 π − θ = 4 π − 2 1 cos − 1 x .
With x = cos 2 θ the fraction is tan ( 4 π − θ ) , giving 4 π − 2 1 cos − 1 x .

Equating with tan − 1 sin x 2 :
sin 2 x 2 cos x = sin x 2 ⇒ cos x = sin x ⇒ tan x = 1 ⇒ x = 4 π
x = 4 π

Solution
tan − 1 1 + x 1 − x = tan − 1 1 − tan − 1 x = 4 π − tan − 1 x
So 4 π − tan − 1 x = 2 1 tan − 1 x , giving 2 3 tan − 1 x = 4 π , tan − 1 x = 6 π , and x = 3 1 .
x = 3 1

1 + x 2 1 (D)
1 + x 2 x Solution
Let tan − 1 x = θ , tan θ = x : a right triangle with opposite x , adjacent 1, hypotenuse 1 + x 2 . So sin θ = 1 + x 2 x .

Solution
Let sin − 1 x = θ . Then sin − 1 ( 1 − x ) = 2 π + 2 θ , so
1 − x = sin ( 2 π + 2 θ ) = cos 2 θ = 1 − 2 sin 2 θ = 1 − 2 x 2
2 x 2 − x = 0 , so x = 0 or x = 2 1 .
Check x = 2 1 : sin − 1 2 1 − 2 sin − 1 2 1 = − 6 π = 2 π , rejected. Check x = 0 : sin − 1 1 − 0 = 2 π ✔.
