Questions, activities and projects

1
Explain the following terms: (a) Continent (b) Ocean (c) Island
Solution

(a) Continent: a very large, continuous expanse of land on the Earth's surface. There are seven: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

(b) Ocean: a huge, continuous body of salt water covering a large part of the Earth. There are five: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic Oceans.

(c) Island: a piece of land, smaller than a continent, that is surrounded by water on all sides, e.g. Sri Lanka, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Greenland.

Continent: a very large continuous landmass. Ocean: a vast body of salt water. Island: land, smaller than a continent, surrounded by water on all sides.

2
Let us draw: Without looking at the maps, draw the continents freehand and colour them. Then compare your drawing with the map of oceans and continents in the chapter.
Solution

Tips for a good freehand sketch:

  • Start with Asia (the largest) in the upper middle, with Europe joined to its west and Africa below Europe.
  • Draw North America and South America on the left side, joined by a thin strip.
  • Put Australia to the south-east of Asia and Antarctica right at the bottom, around the South Pole.
  • Fill the spaces with the oceans: Pacific (largest, between Asia–Australia and the Americas), Atlantic (between the Americas and Europe–Africa), Indian (south of Asia), Southern (around Antarctica) and Arctic (around the North Pole).

Then compare: check the shapes, sizes and positions with the map and note what you got right or wrong.

Sketch the seven continents in their correct positions (Asia largest, Antarctica at the bottom), colour them, and compare with the map.

3
Let us do: On the outline map of the world, label all the continents and oceans.
Solution
Continents (largest to smallest)Oceans (largest to smallest)
Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, AustraliaPacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic
  • Asia: north-east, the largest; Europe: to its west; Africa: south of Europe, crossed by the Equator.
  • North and South America: in the west, between the Pacific and Atlantic.
  • Australia: south-east, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans; Antarctica: around the South Pole.
  • Arctic Ocean: around the North Pole; Southern Ocean: around Antarctica.

Label the 7 continents (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia) and 5 oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic) in their correct places.
