Torque on a magnet: τ=mBsinθ. Potential energy: U=−mBcosθ. Work to turn a magnet from θ1 to θ2: W=mB(cosθ1−cosθ2). Solenoid: m=NIA. Short magnet: Baxial=4πμ0r32m, Bequatorial=4πμ0r3m, with 4πμ0=10−7 T m A⁻¹.
A short bar magnet placed with its axis at 30° with a uniform external magnetic field of 0.25 T experiences a torque of magnitude equal to 4.5×10−2 J. What is the magnitude of magnetic moment of the magnet?
A short bar magnet of magnetic moment m = 0.32 J T⁻¹ is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.15 T. If the bar is free to rotate in the plane of the field, which orientation would correspond to its (a) stable, and (b) unstable equilibrium? What is the potential energy of the magnet in each case?
Solution
U=−mBcosθ, with mB=0.32×0.15=0.048 J.
(a) Stable equilibrium:m along B (θ=0∘). The energy is the lowest possible: U=−mB=−0.048 J. A small twist produces a torque that brings it back.
(b) Unstable equilibrium:m opposite to B (θ=180∘). The energy is the highest: U=+mB=+0.048 J. A small twist makes it turn right round.
(a) m parallel to B, U = −0.048 J. (b) m antiparallel to B, U = +0.048 J.
A closely wound solenoid of 800 turns and area of cross section 2.5×10−4 m² carries a current of 3.0 A. Explain the sense in which the solenoid acts like a bar magnet. What is its associated magnetic moment?
Solution
A current-carrying solenoid produces a magnetic field just like a bar magnet's: one end behaves as a north pole and the other as a south pole; it points north-south when freely suspended; it attracts and repels other magnets; and its field lines outside have the same pattern. Its magnetic moment lies along its axis, in the direction given by the right-hand rule.
m=NIA=800×3.0×2.5×10−4=0.60J T−1
It has the same field pattern and poles as a bar magnet; m=0.60 J T⁻¹ along its axis.
If the solenoid in Exercise 5.3 is free to turn about the vertical direction and a uniform horizontal magnetic field of 0.25 T is applied, what is the magnitude of torque on the solenoid when its axis makes an angle of 30° with the direction of applied field?
Solution
(The book prints "Exercise 5.5"; it means the solenoid of Exercise 5.3, with m=0.60 J T⁻¹.)
A bar magnet of magnetic moment 1.5 J T⁻¹ lies aligned with the direction of a uniform magnetic field of 0.22 T. (a) What is the amount of work required by an external torque to turn the magnet so as to align its magnetic moment: (i) normal to the field direction, (ii) opposite to the field direction? (b) What is the torque on the magnet in cases (i) and (ii)?
Solution
mB=1.5×0.22=0.33 J. The magnet starts at θ1=0∘.
(a)W=mB(cosθ1−cosθ2):
(i) θ2=90∘: W=0.33(1−0)=0.33 J.
(ii) θ2=180∘: W=0.33(1−(−1))=0.66 J.
(b)τ=mBsinθ:
(i) τ=0.33×sin90∘=0.33 N m (it tends to turn the magnet back into line with the field).
(ii) τ=0.33×sin180∘=0.
(a) (i) 0.33 J, (ii) 0.66 J. (b) (i) 0.33 N m, (ii) zero.
A closely wound solenoid of 2000 turns and area of cross-section 1.6×10−4 m², carrying a current of 4.0 A, is suspended through its centre allowing it to turn in a horizontal plane. (a) What is the magnetic moment associated with the solenoid? (b) What is the force and torque on the solenoid if a uniform horizontal magnetic field of 7.5×10−2 T is set up at an angle of 30° with the axis of the solenoid?
Solution
(a)m=NIA=2000×4.0×1.6×10−4=1.28 J T⁻¹, along the axis.
(b) In a uniform field the forces on the two "poles" are equal and opposite, so the net force is zero. The torque is
τ=mBsinθ=1.28×7.5×10−2×sin30∘=4.8×10−2N m
It tends to turn the axis of the solenoid into line with the field.
(a) 1.28 J T⁻¹. (b) Force zero; torque 4.8×10−2 N m.
A short bar magnet has a magnetic moment of 0.48 J T⁻¹. Give the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the magnet at a distance of 10 cm from the centre of the magnet on (a) the axis, (b) the equatorial lines (normal bisector) of the magnet.
Solution
r=0.10 m, r3=10−3 m³.
(a) Axial point:
B=4πμ0r32m=10−7×10−32×0.48=9.6×10−5T
along the magnetic moment (from S to N of the magnet).
(b) Equatorial point:
B=4πμ0r3m=10−7×10−30.48=4.8×10−5T
opposite to the magnetic moment (from N to S, parallel to the magnet's axis).
(a) 9.6×10−5 T along the moment (S→N). (b) 4.8×10−5 T opposite to the moment (N→S).
