Area between y = f(x), the x-axis and x = a, x = b is ∫ab∣f(x)∣dx; split the integral where the curve crosses the x-axis and take each part positive. Area with the y-axis: ∫cd∣x∣dy. Use symmetry: ellipse area =4× the first-quadrant area =πab.
The area bounded by the curve y = x | x |, x-axis and the ordinates x = – 1 and x = 1 is given by (A) 0 (B) 1/3 (C) 2/3 (D) 4/3 [Hint: y = x² if x > 0 and y = – x² if x < 0]
Solution
The curve is symmetric about the origin, and each half has area ∫01x2dx=31.
A=∫−10(−x2)dx+∫01x2dx=31+31
