1 mark: MCQ and Assertion–Reason
Assertion (A): is an irrational number.
Reason (R): Sum of the any two irrational numbers is always irrational.
Solution
Answer: (C)
A is true ( is irrational). R is false: and are irrational but their sum is 0, which is rational.
Assertion (A): H.C.F. , where is a prime number.
Reason (R): H.C.F. of two numbers is always less than or equal to the smaller number.
Solution
Answer: (B)
, so divides , and HCF : A is true. R is a true general fact, but it does not explain why the HCF here equals .

The least number which is a perfect square and is divisible by each of 16, 20 and 50, is:
Solution
Answer: 400 (none of the options). The board gave full marks to every candidate for this question.
LCM, which is already a perfect square, so the least such number is 400.
(Among the options, only 3600 is a perfect square divisible by all three, but it is not the least.)

Prove that is an irrational number given that is irrational number.
Solution
Suppose is rational. Then , where are integers and .
Since , are integers, is rational, so would be rational.
This contradicts the fact that is irrational. Hence is irrational.
If the HCF of 210 and 55 is expressed as , then find the value of .
Solution
and , so HCF .
Prove that is an irrational number given that is irrational.
Solution
Suppose is rational, say , where are integers, .
The right side is rational (a ratio of integers), so would be rational, which contradicts the given fact.
Hence is irrational.
Can the number , being a natural number, end with the digit 0? Give reasons.
Solution
A number ends with 0 only if it is divisible by 10, i.e. its prime factorisation contains both 2 and 5.
. It has no factor 2.
By the uniqueness of prime factorisation (Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic), can never have 2 as a factor. So cannot end with the digit 0.
Three bells toll at intervals of 9, 12 and 15 minutes respectively. If they start tolling together, after what time will they next toll together?
Solution
They toll together again after LCM(9, 12, 15) minutes.
, , . LCM minutes.
They will toll together after 180 minutes = 3 hours.
Prove that is an irrational number, given that is an irrational number.
Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3 and their LCM is 180. What is the HCF of these numbers?
Write the smallest number which is divisible by both 306 and 657.
Find the HCF of 612 and 1314 using prime factorisation.
Given that is irrational, prove that is an irrational number.

LCM .
The number must be a multiple of 3120: and .
Greatest such number .
The dimensions of a window are 156 cm × 216 cm. Arjun wants to put grill on the window creating complete squares of maximum size. Determine the side length of the square and hence find the number of squares formed.
Solution
The side of the largest square is HCF(156, 216).
, . HCF .
Side of each square = 12 cm.
Number of squares 234.
Prove that is an irrational number.
Solution
First, is irrational. Suppose with coprime integers, . Then , so 5 divides and hence . Write : , so 5 divides too. This contradicts being coprime, so is irrational.
Now suppose is rational, with integers , , . Then , which is rational. This contradicts the irrationality of .
Hence is irrational.
Prove that is an irrational number.
Solution
Suppose is rational: , where are coprime integers and .
Squaring: . So 3 divides , and therefore 3 divides (3 is prime).
Let . Then , so 3 divides and hence .
Now 3 divides both and , which contradicts that they are coprime.
Hence is irrational.
Prove that is an irrational number.
Solution
Suppose is rational: , with coprime integers, .
Squaring: . So 5 divides , hence 5 divides (5 is prime). Let .
Then , so 5 divides and hence .
So 5 is a common factor of and , contradicting that they are coprime.
Therefore is irrational.
Prove that is an irrational number, given that is an irrational number.
Find by prime factorisation the LCM of the numbers 18180 and 7575. Also, find the HCF of the two numbers.
Three bells ring at intervals of 6, 12 and 18 minutes. If all the three bells rang at 6 a.m., when will they ring together again?
Prove that is an irrational number, given that is an irrational number.
Find HCF and LCM of 404 and 96 and verify that HCF × LCM = Product of the two given numbers.
4 marks: case-based / source-based
Show that cannot end with digit 0 or 5 for any natural number .
Solution
.
A number ending in 0 or 5 is divisible by 5, so its prime factorisation must contain 5.
By the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic the factorisation of is unique and contains only 2 and 3. So cannot end with 0 or 5.
Prove that is irrational.
Solution
Suppose , where is rational. Squaring: .
The right side is rational, so would be rational.
But is irrational: if in lowest terms, , so 2 and 5 divide ; writing gives , so 2 and 5 divide too, a contradiction.
Hence is irrational.
