Case-based practice
No 2023–2025 Standard paper set a full case study on this chapter, so these two follow the board's case format with the ideas it does test.
Case 1: The street lamp
Meera, who is 1.2 m tall, stands under a street lamp 4.8 m high and walks away from its foot in a straight line at 1.2 m/s. Her shadow falls on the level road ahead of her.
- Which similarity criterion shows that △ABE ~ △CDE? [1]
- How far from the lamp is Meera after 4 seconds? [1]
- (a) Find the length of her shadow after 4 seconds. OR (b) At what distance from the lamp will her shadow be 3 m long? [2]

(iii)(a) 1.6 m. (b) 9 m.
Case 2: Measuring a tree with a mirror
To find the height of a tree, Aman places a small mirror flat on the ground 6 m from the foot of the tree. He walks back until he sees the top of the tree in the mirror; he is then 1.5 m from the mirror and his eyes are 1.6 m above the ground. (The light ray makes equal angles with the ground before and after reflection.)
- Name the two similar triangles and the criterion used. [1]
- Find the height of the tree. [1]
- (a) If the mirror is placed 8 m from the tree, how far from the mirror must Aman stand? OR (b) Find the ratio of the perimeters of Aman's triangle and the tree's triangle in the first set-up. [2]
