9Assertion–Reason

Assertion (A): Oxygen released in photosynthesis comes from water.
Reason (R): In photosynthesis, water is split to provide electrons and protons.

(a) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion (A).(b) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of Assertion (A).(c) Assertion (A) is true but Reason (R) is false.(d) Assertion (A) is false but Reason (R) is true.

10Assertion–Reason

Assertion (A): Cyclic photophosphorylation releases oxygen.
Reason (R): In cyclic photophosphorylation electrons return to PS I.

Case study

A plant physiologist supplies ¹⁴CO₂ to two plants for a few seconds and finds: plant X shows label first in a 3-carbon acid; plant Y first in a 4-carbon acid.

With ¹⁴CO₂, plant X labels a 3-carbon acid first and plant Y a 4-carbon acid first. Then

(a) X is C₄ and Y is C₃(b) X is a C₃ plant and Y is a C₄ plant(c) both are C₃(d) both are C₄

The enzymes that first fix CO₂ in X and Y are

(a) PEP carboxylase in X and RuBisCO in Y(b) RuBisCO in both(c) RuBisCO in X and PEP carboxylase in Y(d) ATP synthase in both

The plant with Kranz anatomy and very little photorespiration is

(a) X(b) both(c) neither(d) Y, because it concentrates CO₂ in the bundle sheath cells
