Case-based practice
In 2023–2025 the case studies that used trigonometry were all heights-and-distances (Chapter 9). These two practise this chapter's ideas in the board's case format.
Case 1: The wheelchair ramp
A school is building a ramp to its entrance. The entrance is 0.5 m above the ground and the ramp is 6.5 m long along its slope. The building rules say the angle of the ramp with the ground must be small enough that its sine is at most .
- Find sin θ for the ramp. Does it meet the rule? [1]
- Find the horizontal length of the ramp and cos θ. [1]
- (a) Find tan θ and verify that . OR (b) If the rise stayed 0.5 m and the angle had to be exactly the one with , how long must the ramp be? [2]
(i) ; since , yes. (ii) Horizontal m; .
(iii)(a) ; ✓. (b) Ramp 6.5 m (the same ramp).
Case 2: The kite string
Riya flies a kite. The string, held at ground level, is 60 m long and makes an angle θ with the ground where . Treat the string as straight.
- Find sin θ and cos θ. [1]
- How high is the kite? [1]
- (a) Find the value of . OR (b) Evaluate from the values and say which identity it shows. [2]

Assertion–Reason (10)
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A. (c) A is true but R is false. (d) A is false but R is true.
- A: . R: for every θ.
- A: for some acute θ. R: The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle.
- A: tan 90° is not defined. R: cos 90° = 0.
- A: is possible. R: sec θ ≥ 1 for acute θ.
- A: . R: sin is an increasing function on 0° to 90°.
- A: . R: tan 45° = 1.
- A: cos 30° > cos 60°. R: cos θ decreases as θ increases from 0° to 90°.
- A: If , then . R: .
- A: is not true for A = 30°. R: while .
